More Training Volume NOT Always Better

🔥 Classic study on training load and performance.

💦🏊‍♂️ 24 collegiate swimmers were randomised in a high and low training load group. For a couple of weeks the high load group had to double the meters the low load swam (see dashed circle).

🧐 Interestingly, after the taper (period of reduced volume) the high load did not provide much benefit performance-wise. On the contrary...

🤸‍♂️🏋🏻‍♂️ A direct transfer to CrossFit or other functional sports is difficult because of the fact that swimming is merely monostructural and CrossFit is of course not. In fact @crossfitbtwb has shown in the past that increasing volume does increase performance in regular CrossFitters.

Question is now; what about elite athletes athletes. Likely for them there will be some upper ceiling of load beyond which adaptations won’t occur anymore. Goal for coach and athlete is then to find this ceiling 🕺🏻.
