Pain tolerance in athletes: Are they really built different?

Athletes And Pain - An Inseparable Relationship?

Some of you will still remember the examples from the first slide. From left to right: Kari Pearce, after her remarkable do-or-die performance in Atalanta at the Games in 2020, Haley Adams, after the ruck-run bloodbath at the Games in 2019 and Sam Briggs, who competed at the Regionals in 2015 with a broken foot and only a couple of weeks later, won Murph at the Games.

Most athletes probably like to believe they can take more pain than their less active counterparts. But does the Science support that view, or are the examples above sheer outliers?

Turns the Science does support the idea, that athletes are more pain tolerant. Surely there is levels to this, but check out our slides above to see what the data suggests.
