What did the training and eating of one of the most successful athletes of all time look like?

🤯 Throwback to this classic and some absolutely mind-boggling numbers of training volume and food intake.

🧂 Again, they have to be enjoyed with a grain of salt. We don't have any means to confirm this data, it is mostly anecdotal evidence. It could very well be that somebody is a little exaggerating.

❗Update on slide 5: in a later interview Phelps confirmed that he rarely hit 12.000 kcal, and that 8.000-10.000 was more like it.

💡This is in line with scientific data from actual studies in which cyclists at the Tour de France ate up to 7600 kcal or more on certain, particularly strenuous stages (see Saris et al., PMID: 2744926).

🏊🏼‍♀️Since these stages are about 6h long, the athletes on average 20-30 kg lighter than Phelps, and swimming as a whole body sport requires more energy per time than cycling, it is very well possible that Phelps needed (and eat) about the same or even more than the TDF cyclists.

🤔Either way, we thought you might enjoy these insights into professional sports. What's your personal training volume and food intake record? 👇🏼
