Why you should taper before a competition: Decrease in training volume improves performance

šŸ‹šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø It is Open week šŸ™Œ

šŸ’¦ To get ready, or at least ā€˜as ready as possibleā€™, tapering down training volume now might be a good strategy to get in your top shape for the coming weeks.

šŸ¤” Why? Tapering, or decreasing training volume/and or intensity in the week(s) before a competition, has been shown to improve subsequent performance by 2-5%. Indeed, in contrary to what many believe, you donā€™t lose fitness in 1-2 weeks. By turning down training a week the athlete will reduce accumulated fatigue and feel fresh on day 1 of the competition.

šŸ‘‰ There are many ways to taper (linear, stepwise or exponential) and youā€™ll have to figure out what works best for you. For instance, a games athlete we know cranks-up the intensity the week(s) before the games, but decreases the volume drastically. ā€˜You gotta keep the engine runningā€™.

ā“Have you ever tapered towards a competition and want to share how it went?
